Me again, trying to spread the word. Been sharing my message about the r-word since I was a kid. Happy that in recent years the amazing people from Special Olympics and Best Buddies have made this initiative global.
Respectful and inclusive language is essential to the movement for the dignity and humanity of people with intellectual disabilities. However, much of society does not recognize the hurtful, dehumanizing and exclusive effects of the word “retard(ed).”
It's time to address this minority "slur" and raise the consciousness of society to its hurtful effects. Our society has learned to except the derogatory use of the r-word. Even when people say "I don't mean it that way," it's still hurtful to people with disabilities, their families and friends.
As a sister of a brother with down syndrome, a special educator and an overall advocate for people with disabilities, this word hurts ME. Please think about your vocabulary.

Well said. It is amazing how society will not tolerate the 'n' word yet the 'r' word is not just as offensive.

I absolutely agree. I worked as a volunteer for special olympics at home before I left for college and left the experience truly inspired. I wish that word was frowned upon as much as other words in our english vocab but unfortunately it's not. I hope one day it will until then all we can do is follow in your footsteps and keep spreading the word.

Its a beautifhl thing you are doing. since i was small ive always had compassion for all living this, i remember crying when my mom was gardening and killed a worm. and these special people are closer to god and so amazing, they are always sweet and kind and always compasionate. i enjoyed reading ur blod, and look forword to hearing more of your accomplishments and stories.

Well We Are All One =) and they hae much to teach you if you notice they stay childlike and you know what we are childs for life and this brings us Joy and Happiness, Usually people see us (children) as empty vessels that need to be filled but what they don't realize is that children are teaching that we shouldn't limit ourselfs with fears but be who we realy are and thats Love =) the fact is that children learn much more faster than adults that have fixed ideas, we are flexible and whole in essence so why use masks ?
